St John’s Church, 157 St John Street

St John’s is the oldest church in northern Tasmania. The architecture of the church and the design of its original fittings were first conceived and planned in nineteenth century colonial Tasmania. The architecture comprises a mixture of Georgian, Gothic Revival, Byzantine and a local adaptation of the English Arts and Crafts styles.  The earliest remaining part of the building is the western tower and adjoining gabled building, finished in a cream stucco, completed in 1825.  From 1901, a major extension begun. Most of the uniquely carved woodwork dates from that period.  In 1938, further significant structural changes were made and again in 1982 and 2003, then in 2023, a much more comprehensive redevelopment of the interior of the building began, allowing external users to stage public events such as orchestral concerts and celebratory dinners.
